blogging Lent

Starting Wednesday, I'm giving up TV for 40 days. My reasons are numerous, but it's mostly because I sit down to watch one show and end up watching for a whole night! Plus, I feel like I'm drawn away from the Lord the more I watch and I'm getting almost "addicted" to certain shows, feeling like I need to watch them. So, I'm going to try to blog through Lent and talk about my struggles, what I'm learning, & what I'm doing instead of watching TV.

(this also means for me no TV on my computer, b/c I usually watch shows the next day at work during lunch. It also means no more than 1 movie a week...I don't want to replace movies with TV)

Tommy Nelson & Depression

My alarm is set for 5am, but I rarely get up then. Instead, I go in and out of sleep as "Focus on the Family" plays on the radio. Most times, it grabs my attention and I go back and listen to that day's show.
Well, today was one of those days as Tommy Nelson was on the show talking about his struggle with depression. There are three interviews and I would encourage everyone to listen to these broadcasts, because I'm sure everyone has some connection with depression.
And I'm sometimes inclined to think that depression is made up and people who struggle with it just need to read more Scripture, to this argument Tommy Nelson said "I had memorized Romans through Jude, what else should I memorize?"

After my 40 mile bike ride on Saturday, I headed home to see if my influenza-ailed roommate needed anything. We decided to just watch a movie, since it was Valentine's and neither of us had plans, and I was pretty exhausted from my ride. So, I headed to Blockbuster and decided on W and Fireproof.
I wanted to give W a chance and see it for myself.

Well, we decided to watch W first, hoping that I wouldn't have to turn it off out of disgust. And we actually ended up watching more of it than I thought we would have. I was intrigued to find out how George and Laura met, so we kept watching, and then it turned into a bad car wreck you couldn't look away from.
The movie was awful. I don't think Oliver Stone should be allowed to make movies. The acting was bad, the script was bad, the characters looked like they were playing make-believe White House staff, it was almost hysterical. It also made Bush out to look like an arrogant jerk, which some may say he is. However, if Bush truly is the person that Stone made him out to be, Bush would have to be a mastermind at two-facing the American people, which I don't think he was. No, Stone just took conversations and situations we've all heard about W and created scenes around them.
I'll be very interested in reading Laura & George's memoirs...maybe someone can make a more legit film about W.
The night was redeemed with Fireproof which had an excellent Gospel message!

what's new

I know it's been a very long time since my last post. I think I'm technologically overwhelmed & confused a bit. Now that I'm on twitter, I don't really know where to post my thoughts first, twitter, which feeds to facebook, and then here.
Well, if you still check this thing, good for you, there are some really good old posts that you should read!

I am heading into the studio to record a CD next month and I've been saving almost every penny & furiously trying to finalize my songs, which is not an easy task. I feel like I still don't know what I'm doing when I write songs; I'd like to improve, but don't really know how to go about that other than listening to really good songs and practicing my writing.

I want my album to be glorifying to God and help others to love and understand Him more. Please pray that God would continue to lead every word that I write in these songs. I also want to write one more song that talks about who I am in Christ, but I feel that it's been sung already in ways so much better than I could sing it. Please pray that God would lead this last song I need to write.
