Yes, folks, it's true...I'm engaged! Oh and it's so crazy, exciting and a little weird! The weird part is that I'm going to be a wife after being SO single for 28 years.
Last Friday, Matthew and I went out to eat at Houston's on the Plaza. I didn't really think anything special was going to happen and that it was a nice Friday night dinner, albeit nicer than our usual Friday night dinners. Well, when we were done we walked around the Plaza a little bit. Matthew got a call from Adam to ask if he could stop by the Filling Station and pick up something he dropped off and he wasn't able to go by there. So, we got in the car and headed over to the Filling Station. Matthew was driving super fast and kinda crazy, but we've had conversations about how I just need to let him drive and not make comments :-) so I just looked out the window. I did think at one point, "maybe this is a set up and he's going to propose tonight," but I didn't see Matthew as someone sly like that, so thought it was nothing. When we got there he asked me if I wanted to come in, and it still didn't tip me off! But when we walked in the lights were dim, and there was a table with flowers and candles on it; I knew instantly what was going on! I couldn't believe it! He walked me over to the table and we started dancing to "Over the Rainbow," which was playing when we walked in. I did NOT want to dance, however. I wanted him to ask me to marry him! I was kind of squirming, but Matthew had be in a death grip.
Anyway, so when the song ended he said to me (and this is a paraphrase of what I remember), "Leslie, there's something I want to tell you that I've never told any other girl and that is that I love you. want to spend the rest of my life serving you. The last nine months have been wonderful, even though we've have our rough times, and there's a question I want to ask you." Matthew knelt down and asked me to marry him! I couldn't stop crying and said yes so fast he could hardly get the words out to ask me!
Then we let Matthew's scheme team inside, since they had been waiting outside in the cold & rain. I gave everyone hugs and told them how I really had no clue! Matthew and I then sat down and he told me how he's been planning all week and how he bought the ring last Sunday, but they had to ship it to Kansas City and promised it to be here by Friday. So, Matthew was freaking out all week about the ring getting here in time.
Matthew and I are planning on getting married this summer in Kansas City! I'm so excited to be his wife, to marry him, to make a home with him, to have babies with him, Lord-willing (yay babies!). I'm also excited that my Houston friends and family will get to come up here and see what my life is like here. I can't wait to show off Kansas City to them!
We covet your prayers during this sweet time that we don't get overwhelmed by planning an event, and that God will be honored and glorified through our engagement and wedding.
How can God not be honored when such a sweet couple are planning a joint path through the rest of their lives? Whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name...You absolutely have my prayers, my very best wishes, and I still miss you, Les! Great story, thank you for sharing.
